After password input at KDM screen changes to black, or some color ASCII
symbols, or even some previous screen. It's looks like uninitialized memory at
video card. After some moments it switches back to KDM login prompt.

lucid. The bug persists after upgrading to maverick. I would paste the
strace of gnome-session and X applications but is the same as the ones
pasted above (apps get stuck reading from /tmp/.ICE-unix and gnome-

The "Aubergine" package did the trick for me too, I use Maverick x86_64
and Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600.

I am able to boot up in failsafe mode and run failsafex in low
resolution mode, getting the popup message: 'could not apply stored
monitor settings'. None of the other items on the failsafe menu, such as
'reconfigure graphics' work. That is when I select them, it just returns

Excellent!!! After
git checkout 6936fb
and building and starting applications as in comment #42 the problem is
gone.
Tested with running stellarium and resizing glxgears.

I can confirm this as well on a VPCF11C5E. 260.x drivers are completely
unusable. Purple screen and a full system hang. 256.x drivers work like
a charm.
