I have the same issue with nvidia kernel but nouveau works fine.
Only an Alt-Sysrq-B gets any response even in recovery mode for
2.6.35-14-generic kernel.
Fortunately, I still had a mainline kernel (2.6.34-020634-generic) from testing
before I upgraded to Maverick from Lucid.

Sorry, bad news!
That's a workaround and not a solution. Composite doesn't works with radeon
modesetting disabled.
I'm using metacity with composite enabled. When I follow instructions in #30, I
get a blank screen in google earth.

i tried to use the sym link work-around without success

I was finding that the packages from raof PPA weren't helping.
I'm currently using the glasen PPA packages successfully.

Yes. Just entering grub and "looking" at the options is enough. But the laster
couple of day since the Xorg upgrade the problems have progressed. It seems
like the proprietary driver is no longer compatible wilth Xorg. So it is not
100% improsible to use anything else than nouveau.

my workaround to this was adding/using the xorg-edgers ppa, but nvidia-current
256.44 will land in Maverick soon, too.
I would have expected the dependencies to hold the xserver upgrade back though.
