I have the same problem on a ThinkPad T60p.
When connecting an extrenal monitor, the image is displayed, but very
wobbly and therefore unusable.
Only when I set the 640x480 resolution on the external monitor, the
screen seems to stabalize.
Video hardware is: Ati FireGL V5250, So it might be a mo
Retested on the original machine with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS. No log
writings in /var/log/gdm/\:0.log anymore.

Yet another update. It turns out that compositing proved not to be the
culprit; things got bad faster if compositing was on, but eventually it
happens anyway even if compositing was off. I was teaching recently and
the display on my laptop was fine, but the display that the class saw
was weaving in
For me anyway (from comment #8) turning off kernel modesetting does the
trick.
Modify the line in /etc/default/grub from something like:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
to something like:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"
Then do sudo update-grub. But yea.. I am upgrading most of

It's the same for me. I switched to the vesa driver and the issue was
gone. Then I switched back to the nvidia driver and the issue is back
again. Look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubunt
So now I ran without Desktop Effects for ~24hrs and got a crash that didn't
lock up the PC. Xorg.0.log didn't show anything interesting but kern.log had
some good info which I'll attach.
Next step I'll try the mainline kernel as suggested. Should I just download the
*.deb files or could I add a

Experiencing the same behaviour as the reporter, moving the pen away
from the tablet and then using it again helps, but isn't the way to go.
Also the buttons on the pen are mapped wrongly.
