Not necessary . The package gnome-screensaver is supposed to fix this by

You are right that tearing appears even without Compiz but this could be
circumvented by using OpenGL video output and activating vsync for
everything in the AMD Controlcenter. This workaround doesn't work with
Compiz so the main problem is with Compiz.

Now I just had what seemed to be a kernel crash caused by X. I was taken
directly to the console which had a lot of text starting with something like
"Oops BUG:" but I was unable to save the output because every command I issued
just typed the backtrace on the terminal.
I did however find /var/l

Nevertheless I have given up hope that this bug will be fixed in the
near futures. This issue is known since several years and it seems that
some serious changes are needed
I have had a few crashes since last post. This time I succeeded to
record the debug print outs from the modem-manager. Since I have not had
any crashes when running with the WLAN, I thought it could be
interesting to see if the 3G connection could be the problem. Below is
the log.

"lucid" would be more appropriate because I was upgrading from Karmic to
Lucid (so it can be hardly bug in Karmic IMHO).

Applied the patch as listed by vanzylst. (And had to sort out about 40
dependencies to be able to build xorg-server.) Did not change a thing for me
though.
Worked around the problem by making my leftmost monitor 'screen 0' instead of
the middle one... (Got a 3 screen setup on Lucid with 2 Nvidia
