Ilja, the NMI issue is a different one. You should report that
separately against "linux" since it is likely an issue with the kernel

i845 worked O.K. since putting retro on 4/22. Just now booted up was
doing an aptitude update with Firefox up and black screened no zebra
stripes. ssh worked so tar is attached.

Just fixed my own problem!
When I start the Live CD, I enter a custom configuration before Ubuntu
boots off the CD. If i type;
video=CTR-0:800x600
The screen does not go out of range! Instead it sets the resolution to
the correct 1024x768!!!

FYI, I can't boot into 2.6.32-21 recovery mode, it's also stucked.
I guess you can confirm again if you are reporting from 2.6.31-19/20 or

Regarding my comment in #7, I've been running for the last 4 days
without problems after disabling KMS (radeon.modeset=0).

My upstream bug was pretty quickly marked a duplicate of another bug and within
that bug's comments I found this tip:
Go to Compiz settings (compizconfig-settings-manager), in there to general
settings and deselect Lighting.
That fixed the issue for
I can confirm that 2.6.32-21 freezes X completely. A low resolution
flash screen warning about HD check shows a few seconds, then the screen
flashes, goes blank and then freezes completely. The only thing to do
then is a hard reboot. 2.6.32-20-generic works, but boots slower than

I confirm that same issue occurs for my thinkpad x31 after upgrading to
10.04 beta-1. Screen freezes randomly, displays coloured vertical and
horizontal bars. Reset required after crash.

Are you *sure* the failed_log isn't accidentally a successful run?
After sed-ing out the differences in dates and times a diff doesn't show
much difference aside from echoing of the commands in the
successful_log.

For normal boot you can fix temporarily the problem until the bug fixed
by changing your "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" by this (this is the failsafe
conf) :
