Basically I can only confirm wat has been posted recently.
IMHO the "i915.modeset=0" option added gives me more headaches than WITHOUT.
Without the option I have currently 1 or 2 hard crashes a day, which is not
pleasant but I can live with it since my desktop is not my "production" machine.

the stub for the desktop /usr/share/app-install/desktop is present but
the script that actually should do the work

When I put my notebook in docking-station, with secondary monitor attached, I
still get the same behavior as before (have to press Alt-SysRq-K to get X
restart). The bug is fixed for me when booting WITHOUT secondary monitor
attached. So it seems that Plymouth doesn't work correctly with multipl
in karmic: the calibrate_touchscreen.sh is a link to
../lib/xf86-input-evtouch/calibrate.sh

I could solve it by disabling "Execution Prevention" in the BIOS under Security
-> Memory Protection.

I don't expect disabling KMS to help overall. The nature of this bug is
that it's timing-dependent, so just about any change can affect the
stability for better or worse. On an affected system, I would often get
a repeatable freeze on bootup after upgrading an unrelated package just

I find all the i915 references a bit confusing, considering that the
graphics core is a GMA 4500MHD (mobile version of the GMA X4500). The
GMA 4500 is architecturally completely different than the i915 and the
differences in terms of features are significant as well. I was under
the impression that

That was leftovers from when I helped test the nouveau driver before it was
included by default in lucid. Removed the xorg-edgers repository and ran an
