The problems you have with each driver is probably independent (although
-radeonnhd and -ati might be the same), so please file separate bugs.
Does vesa crash if you log in to a failsafe session (gnome or terminal)?

I'm starting to wonder if there is another separate driver problem hampering
the RS690 chipset. You did mention that your CPU wasn't being pinned high
anymore. I think that is the main fix that this patch brings, but my chipset
is RS482 Xpress 200M, so it may be a different problem as well. I

i mentioned one more thing today. my CPU works at ondemand mode at 800 MHz.
it turned to 1.9 GHz with old mesa packages with glxgears. today with new mesa

Dear Andy,
I tried these solution, and the video tearing almost disapeared, except
by fast actions, it still shows some tearing. parts of a movie with
simple camp fire for example.

As suggested I installed generic kernel and I think the problem is much
less frequent, but if I quickly move from one time frame to another I
still manage to crash X server.
How come that the server kernel worked with 8.10 without any problem.

i have the exact same problem on ubuntu jaunty (9.04), fresh install,
