I have the same issues (get the same error code) but only when trying to
launch SuperTuxKart 3D game.
I can play video and have been able to sucesfully play some other old
Windows 3d games via Wine without a problem.
The same happens also if I use Lubutnu so it's not a unity/compiz
related issue.
I'm impressed with a response and encouraged with the exception of my,
likely, inability to understand all the suggested fixes and how they are
to be applied. My "ace-in-the-hole" is that I teach non-technical
subjects at a computer-based technical college and have a classroom full
of students that
Btw, if it does lockup again with the newer kernel, you need to collect
the output of 'dmesg' and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
file. Both of these must be collected while the machine is locked up
(e.g. by sshing into the sick machine over ethernet). See

Hi Gifford, upstream thinks this may be fixed already in the mainline
kernel, by commit c501ae7f332cdaf42e31af30b72b4b66cbbb1604 which is
included in v3.4-rc1.
