This is an X11 (or lightdm, or whatever) issue, not a video driver
issue. I have the exact same symptoms but I have a nVidia chipset on my
laptop. I also did a complete wipe and re-install and had the identical
problem when using the daily build iso for 2011-08-12. I went back to
my daily build
Exactly same problem, same HW (AMD64, Phenom CPU, Radeon HD*).
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
seemed to resolve this bug, but only was the tip of the iceberg of
getting back to normal ubuntu life.
People likely will be directed/googled here, I just want to show what
did not bring things back
I have had exactly the same problem. Installing lightdm-gtk-greeter
solved the problem for me.
