Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it
looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development
period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release,
which makes me wonder if this is still an issu
i was on a fresh maverick install and was the first fglrx installation.

I had the same problem, and it happened because I installed fglrx and
tried to re-run X without rebooting the machine.
(I know that the usual driver packages can load fglrx without
rebooting (in fact, they can even load it in-place), but in this case
it obviously didn't work).
So the solution tha
you must do sudo aticonfig --initial then reboot o restart xserver
is all installed but xorg don't use the driver
