@Martin, no, with kernel modesetting it's the kernel that's responsible
for all of this. xserver-xorg-video-ati is just the DDX driver and no
longer handles this.

I have the same problem on my Thinkpad T41 with RV250 on Maverick. This
system has been upgraded twice from 9.10.
