Ted, could you try one more test for us?
Install the broken 2.11.4.1-2 package again, then run:
Xorg -verbose
This would give us a more complete log that we could use to try to fix
the change that broke it, rather than simply reverse it.

Ted, thanks for testing this.
There was only one change that could affect resolution detection between
those two and it's easily reversed.
