I had the same problem after switching from the xserver-xorg-video-ati
driver to fglrx and then back to xserver-xorg-video-ati after
experiencing a memory leak:

The problem was the fglrx package installs this file:

Cannot set screen resolution ab
I have tha same (1440, gamma, fglrx removed) with Radeon HD 4850, but only on
upgraded ubuntu from 12.04 to 14.04 (both LTS) .
With "14.04.1 LTS desktop live" I have correct resolution:
root@ubuntu:~# xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
HDMI-0 disconnect
