actually, the X server starts in some ridiculously small resolution in
which gm screen is shown but when I log in the screen resolution is
changed to the highest

I don't know if the vmware graphics communicates the real size of the
window in which the virtual machine runs.
However, in absence of such information (or failing to communicate it)
