@Tima, yes that is correct, I have some dkms package installed that
needs the headers. I do have the linux-generic package installed and
it also pulls the headers in. The problem was that it consequently
installed the headers *after* processing dkms.

After installing linux-image-3.13.0-8-generic the problem is back
one difference: it now boots to desktop "without problem" but apport is
triggered due to the "Microcode not responding" error

After installing linux-headers-3.13.0-7-generic manually
and re-installing linux-image-3.13.0-7-generic
the problem seems solved.
Not that I fully understand what happened but nevertheless... :-)

Booting the previous 3.13.0-6-generic will continue to boot but shows the
"firmwre not responding" error briefly.

Christopher, I installed the last developement release of Ubuntu (14.04)
and it stalls after graphical login, leaving a blank screen so I only
could try to fix stuff from the commandline.

More than a year later this bug is still very prominent in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Half a year ago a fix was committed but hasn't reached the repositories yet ???
(not even in "proposed" or "backports")
