I have laptop hp pavillion g6 (1170sv model) and I have the same problem. With
open source drivers my laptop is overheating up to 80C... When I install
propritary driver my laptop have 70C, but the unity not appear. Now I have
installed gnome classic to work and I think the ati driver not work c

Same problem! Trying to use a Nvidia FX5200 (uses 173 driver).
I can not install 173 driver. I installed the current but after awhile my
resolution changed to 1024X768.
