As I remember well all the freezed areas are created using some contexxt menu.
Windows and dialogs are not left these kind of mess after them.

Today I have faced with the similar issue in low graphics mode (VESA),
so it is possible that the problem's source is not in the xorg ati
driver.

Sometimes an area of the screen get somehow freezed. It means that if I
open a new window the unrefreshed area hides it. It is very annoying,
because the only way to get rid of this
