Finally it worked :-)
The key was to tell me to change "via" to "openchrome". The instructions
say to change vesa, and there was none. Also, there are several Device
sections in the xorg.conf file, so I never knew which to change.
And I guess the version got updates since July 7 also. If not, the
the man page says openchrome 0.2.903

I tried the patch in the openchrome directory and it seemed to work. But
remaking and reinstalling did not change anything.
Since it works with a totally plain xorg.conf file, there must be

does not really tell me how to apply the patch. At which stage? in which
directory?
I have an openchrome directory with a src subdirectory.

The problem must be in xorg.conf. The one that
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver.org
made had almost nothing in it (see attached xorg.conf.new).
But the old one had lots in it. I copied it to xorg.conf and rebopoted, and got
low graphics mode again.
And wireless is now still very dead.

Redoing this fixed the problem, but it was harder than necessary.
I changed the wiki to reflect the extra package that needs to be installed.
