Same problem for me with Lubuntu 18.04 System freezes at random times. Screen
is then completely filled with non-sens signs. Graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce
6150SE nForce 430. Driver is Nouveau.

As it happens, the bug stopped some time after I reloaded the grub files a few
weeks ago.
Since then a number of patches have been edited which may have also corrected
the problem.
I really don't know what happened but now I can enjoy Ubuntu without fearing a
crash.
Thanks will definitely go and take a look. Only been on Linux about a month
or so and really loving it ,but still finding my feet

I submitted the bug report and possible keyboard alternative map, as I
fixed it on my Ubuntu machine (and per SIL standards)
However I am not competent to confirm your fix is OK, sorry I am not
knowledgeable at all on Linux
and I have no clue on how to test your fixes using the pag
and sorry, I forgot to repeat : the layout needs anyhow to be fixed as it does
not longer reflect the official alphabet, and is remote fro the other current
implementations for Windows and for Mac aligned on the SIL recommendations.

At work I easely connect and get an output trough HDMI on an Asus
monitor. At home I used to get the same on my LG plasma TV. Now the TV
actually shows that it is connecting but the PC never sends an actual
output signal to the TV.

Turns out this is a XORG issue.
Fixed it by creating a file called "50-plantronics.conf" in
"/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" with the following content:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Plantronics"
MatchVendor "Plantronics"
Option "Ignore" "true"

Thanks Jevonearth, was just about to test the newer kernel, now I don't
have to.
Could a guru script something up that can detect state change and run
that command as needed?
That way we can use the Plantronics at least a little for now until a
permanent fix is available.

I have also had the same problem on a Dell M11X for the longest time. I
think it started with 10.10, am now up to 12.04. it never went away. boy
it would be really nice to have a fix. For now I just carry a spare usb
mouse with my portable :-(

Same problem here.
Also noticed that it seem to affect everything horizontally to the problem
area, when it is happening.
When the windows is moved or re sized in any way the problem goes away for a
short while.
I have a Fujitsu N751 Laptop running Ubuntu 11.04.
Is also happening on my desktop
After trying a few tips from the forum, I gave up and did a fresh
install. I was receiving a "installArchives() failed" message related to
the fglrx package that could not be removed.
Everything is back to normal, so far!

I've seen your post on launchpad and regarding the second issue with
sound, did you try alsamixer from the command line?
It helped me resolve an issue with sound on my netbook. If you play with
the various levels, you may well find what you need.
