@MikeyP I think the fact you're changing to ATI from nVidia is solving
your problem, the DVI/VGA difficulties are just a red herring, because
graphics cards simply transmit the VGA over these DVI adaptors.

it seems they must have found a workaround.
however the main nvidia driver issue is still there, this demo program

It might be worth waiting until that code gets ported to the official
repositories.
Also note this is a problem with the nvidia drivers, and installing a
new gnome-shell is just a workaround.

I think this might be a security vulnerability, because sometimes when
logging in with another user already - instead of showing zebra stripes
it can show content from the previous framebuffer.
This means that content from the other user shows up on the new login.
