I have an Acer Timeline 5810TZ and the only differences I'm seeing is
that I have bios version 1.33 and clean update from the current daily
and the bug completely freezes my machine not even allowing me to adjust
the brightness further. I may check the PPA listed above later today.

as many people are commenting on this issue I doubt greatly that all have
brightness settings in their bios. I know I do not. I may need to start a new
bug report though as I am getting an all new response after doing a clean
install updates and bios update with karim final. brightness keys work
Matti,
while not a perfect solution the command "xrandr --output LVDS --set
BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native" will make screen brightness work (if not
perfectly) when entered. it is not persistent and needs to be reentered
on boot either manually or by setting it as a startup process.

my friend has one. we'll be testing it later this week as well as
checking xrandr screen rotation. I'll post back by friday at the latest.

xrandr backlight property control missing (when using KMS?)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/4280
the milestone simply indicates that they hope to have a fix in by the
beta release(a development milestone release). It could be in a daily
build this weekend, or prove difficult enough to fix that it misses the
milestone. Time will tell.. I'm hoping for this weekend.

some people on the forums claim to have encountered this problem while
not using xserver-xorg-video-ati driver, or ati hardware for that
matter. so you have to prove it is part of the problem and not just
present along side the problem.
