The desktop team have tested on a variety of different hardware and we can
reproduce this issue every time. I think this is a significant issue for
desktop users and will affect anyone trying to run Cosmic in Virtualbox on

As a first step could you try switching to vt1 and back to vt7 without
killing unity-panel-service. This will help to narrow down the problem.
Switching vt might be enough to get the video woken up, and unity-panel-
service might be a bit of a red herring.

I also was having this problem. As mentioned by @federicotg, I upgraded
to the AMD Catalyst 14.9 driver, and I have been running Ubuntu for
about 6 days 24/7 with no leaks (at least not noticeable anyway). Xorg
stays around 250MB of usage on average for me now.

When resuming my laptop from sleep via the keyboard, occasionally X will
freeze up - this is usually associated with one of my monitors not
displaying output. I can't reach a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F2 and I have
to open the laptop and reboot with Alt-PrtScr-(REISUB)
I'm afraid I can't comment on whether it's still valid or not because

I'm experiencing the same behavior after upgrading to 10.10. I have a
Dell Precision M4400, and am using an external display, rotated to
portrait mode using Xinerama. I can run gitk in NVIDIA's twin view or
when the external monitor is disabled.

for me (on Lucid Lynx 10.04, HP Pavilion Laptop). That bug affected me
for ages.
Anyone else who has this problem, paste this into your terminal:
gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_e

I believe this is the same as bug 220951, I have no usable TTYs when
nvidia is enabled, but do with nv drivers. I'm submitting this with all
the apport info.

I can confirm this with the legacy 96 drivers (MX400 hardware) on 10.04,
none of the above makes TTYs useable, note I also have no
Plymouth/splash during boot or shutdown. With nv everything works as it
should.
