I've had the same problem, with various related symptoms (See bugs I've
marked as duplicate of this one). I have Intel 945GME. This can be fixed
by uninstalling the nvidia drivers. The question is why the nvidia
drivers got installed in the first place.

Public bug reported:
I upgraded to Lucid Netbook Edition on my eee 1008HA. The GDM greeter
shows a number of options. Ubuntu Netbook 2D loads fine. Logging into
Ubuntu Netbook loads the top panel, but not the desktop.
Running netbook-launcher manually gives:
