Thanks for the tip, I'm completely new at this. Funnily enough though,
my system crashes when I try to execute that command as a super user.

I suffer the same problem too, adjusting the brightness via settings or
keyboard doesn't actually affect screen brightness, and when it lowers
brightness due to inactivity the screen flashes scaringly. Same
hardware: Dell XPS13 developer edition w/ native ubuntu (upgraded to
13.04 and up-to-date).

ked! I have now suspended and resumed both via lid-close/open
and power button several times without a problem.
Hibernate still does not work, but I guess I should submit this as a
different bug.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi,
Cannot test these all now, but I've tried the suspend on lid close.
Again it worked fine first time (i.e., it suspended and then resumed
correctly when I opened the lid). However, the second time, the lid open
produced a reboot.
I'll test other things tomorrow morning.
Many thanks

I've kept installing upgrades and now I have managed to find one

I can confirm that I've had the same sort of problem on my laptop a few
minutes ago, immediately after an update (I do updates every day). I get
a black screen. Even recovery mode did not help. Had to revert back to
the previous kernel in recovery mode to be able to even get a plain text
login. Mac
Yes, I'm using Intel. This morning (UK time) I checked for updates and
found there were some. After installing them I get exactly the same
behaviour as you. (With last night's state I could not use CTRL+ALT+Fn
to get console login. (I had to use an older kernel in recovery mode.)
