I have a Lenovo T430.
When I reboot the screen will freeze (requires reboot) before the login prompt
if I have both my digital display port and vga plugged in while my laptop is
open. If I unplug the external monitors it boots fine. If I boot then quickly
close the laptop s
I've upgraded my kernel to 3.4.5 (quantal) from the mainline and haven't had a
crash since with the 302.17 nvidia driver.
Also mentioned earlier downgrading to 290.10 fixes it as well.

And it stopped again, just installed 12.04 from scratch (new HDD), completely

No, this is not the same issue, the X-server crash results in a lost session
setting you back to the login screen.
The 30x.xx driver series has nothing to do with this bug, it's not even in the
repository.

For those who don't wan to break there package management, I have downloaded
the 290.10 driver from here:

Changed it dependency to "xorg-video-abi-11" and recreated the deb file.
Use "sudo dpkg -i nvidia-c
Still crashing regularly with the 295.53, if 290.10 does not have this
bug the default software source (nvidia-current) should get rid of
295.40 and replace it with that version for now.
Again, this is a major show stopper for potentially every nVidia user!

This issue should be assigned to someone by now and he/she should be working
round the clock to fix this, there are litterally millions of pc's using nVidia
hardware which all potentially have this bug.

Everything seems fine in 12.04 (Except the buttons), there is some
unrelated bug concerning this tablet, when the battery reports to be
empty, the attached computer running Ubuntu will suspend as if it's
laptop battery was empty.

Installing the most current nvidia drivers (275.09.07) as suggested in
#114 doesn't work for me either.
I have found that the nouveau driver works quite well though, I've been
using it for quite a while now and haven't had any problems. As a
reminder: Comment #73 explains how to set it up.

I'm really impressed by the nouveau driver, most things are actually
working now, even hardware acceleration. The only problem I have with it
though that performance is not that great, at least not compared to the
nvidia driver, which on this older laptop does make a big difference.

I've had this problem on another laptop with a core2duo once as well. It also
uses a SSD.
So it does appear to be an SSD loading issue.
Something gets loaded to quickly and the core i7 makes it happen all the time.

a Core2Duo instead of a Core i7 and works perfectly fine.

Same here killing and starting gnome-settings-daemon as root returned the theme
more or less.
Nautilus still looks bad and the indicator icons still remain as the were.
It does start to hog my CPU though (gnome-settings-daemon) and remains running

I've never used the wobbly windows plugin.
In my experience the amount of open windows determines the performance problem.
No windows and it seems to be working fine, but even 1 window results in a
noticeable frame drop.
And I'm using 5 desktop all packed with windows and virtual machines causing
Unfortunately not even the final version of 10.10 fixed this issue and it
remains crippling the desktop usage.
I would consider this a major bug because Ubuntu uses the desktop effects by
default.
Even the upgrade to the 260.xx driver from nVidia did not fix anything.

Nope, but id did just now, but the performance stays the same.
I did upgrade a small laptop which is using a nVidia 8400M GS chip to Meercat
Alpha 2+ and it's performing way better..
Don't know exactly what changed (yet), but is seems to use the same Compiz and
nVidia driver.

Yes the command works! But is doesn't help. No difference in performance
of Compiz (Still lags tremendously, more windows seem to make it worse).
