I'm able to get some of the same effects in other applications with some
experimentation. If I scroll a lot in Gwibber, then switch desktops to
one with a full-screen gnome-terminal, the terminal window doesn't
redraw properly.

On Alberto's advice on IRC, I tried moving ~/.config/monitors.xml out of
the way, and that has resolved the problem.

As an experiment, we tried creating a new user and logging in with
Unity, and the problem vanished! It drives the external monitor just
fine.
If I then switch over to Jane's account, it exhibits the same problem.
But then I can switch back to my account, and it works again!

This is the same system involved in bug 462674, and the circumstances
were similar, though the symptoms are a bit different.
The X server suddenly crashed, and gdm attempted to restart it several
times, but failed. It came up in
I still see this in current Lucid as well. I'm not at all certain that
the problem lies in xserver-xorg-input-evdev. A good test would be to
suspend and resume on the console, to see if the problem only occurs
under X.

Attached is a debdiff which attempts to automate the whole thing. I've
not been able to test the udev rule yet; I had one GPU hang but it did
not result in a uevent.

This just happened on current Karmic, in the middle of normal usage
(doing email in mutt in gnome-terminal). The only unusual thing I've
been doing with this system this week is connecting to projectors in the
office.
