I confirm the issue on a desktop with Intel HD Graphics 530 (rev 06)
(Core i7-6700 CPU).
At present time I found that it can be worked around in two ways:
1) Using the '--disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds' option:
# google-chrome-stable --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds
2) Defining MESA_LOAD

I am still experiencing this in precise, either with fglrx 8.911
(included in the repos) or fglrx 8.950 (Catalyst 12.2, installed
manually from packages built by the installer).
Side note: this fglrx update did wonders with gnome-shell, this might as
well be a bug with fglrx as pointed out by Łuka
Workaround described in comment #9 doesn't seem to apply to Precise.

I have just tried with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.8.1-1, the system crashes on
boot, particularly, when gdm login starts.
I have disabled compiz and seems to work. With the driver
xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 seems there aren't problems, no crashs with this

I have the same problem: with ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia 185 driver after
grub the screen became black ("no vga signal"). after that i'm unable to
switch to ctrl+alt+F1 or reboot with ctrl+alt+canc and I must restart
computer.
