I use two accounts on my computer.
1000 - My main, useful account.
1001 - For testing without messing up my settings on 1000.
I always log in 1000 first and log in a second time with 1001.
When I first start the computer I can log in and out multiple times

This is related to bug #993427 however the xorg edgers fails to install
properly without the patches and it's possible to recover from the
official installer if you manually add the patches to the system.
The best way to test is to install the xorg edgers ppa:

I got my system working again by:
1. Loading failsafe X
2. Downloading and installing the latest fglrx
3. Rebooted (but then Wine wouldn't start - this is usually a sign that fglrx
is NOT installed)
4. Installed the fglrx-updates packages
5. Rebooted

FURTHER NOTES
1)
A clue about these Bugs is that UpGrades tend to reset Settings, in a
big way.
2)
For example, I went into Settings-DeskTop-Menus and turned
off the :
"Windows-List-Menus"
option, by deselecting it.
Now I can mouse-click-grab the screens right along the top bar. So point 2)

and now I am running Unity 3D.
Hopefully this helps someone else.
