Public bug reported:
Ubuntu 13.04
Just got the latest linux-headers-3.8.0-18 update. After a restart Grub
launches, if I choose Ubuntu (its either that or a memory test) I get a
screen of jumbled text and nothing else happens, though the term "kernel
tainted by nvidia" or something to that effect
Crisis averted. Whatever happened entering the following fixed the
issue;
sudo apt-get purge fglrx lightdm && sudo apt-get install lightdm ubuntu-
desktop
** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)

after a window opens and usually disappears some time after the window

The problem still exists on my system under Lucid too. It seems to be
connected to the compiz fusion icon. If I do not load it at start-up my
system will freeze after a few mins forcing a hard shutdown. As long as
I have the compiz fusion icon running it seems fine.

There seems to be a fix for this on the Ubuntu Forums,
http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1307001&page=3 post #22.
I logged in with effects set to none. Uninstalled the compiz components
as per the forum post then reinstalled. Set-up compiz icon and then
turned on my preferred effects
