just to let everyone know: installing karmic from scratch worked for me,
I was now able to install the nvidia185 driver without problems. This is
not a fix of course...

I couldn't find a make.log in /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/build/, the
attached file is
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/2.6.31-14-generic/i686/log/make.log

Here comes the Xorg.0.log (i.e. /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after trying to start
with nvidia installed).
There were several other log files starting with Xorg, namely
Xorg.0.log
Xorg.1.log
Xorg.1.log.old
Xorg.99.log
Xorg.99.log.old
Xorg.failsafe.log
Xorg.failsafe.log.old
in case you need any of them

Under Kubuntu 9.04 I installed the proprietary nvidia driver 185 for my nVidia
Quadro NVS 140M.
This finally made Suspend to RAM work, which before only left me with a black
screen upon trying to resume. Also fancy desktop effects worked
