I resolved this issue on Lucid by updating my system on safe mode with:
$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Probably was a xorg-core-server update.

I've tested it on Jaunty, but the problem is still there, I got
vertical colored lines on screen just before rebooting :(.
I added the PPA repositories and made an update:
$ aptitude show nvidia-glx-180
Package: nvidia-glx-180
Status: installed
Automatically instaled: no
Version: 185.18.14-0ubunt
I can confirm the same issue of Obed Arbel, when I close the lid i get
the freezes, I don't get the freeze by doing hard work on the laptop or
using compiz, I am using the lastest intel driver available. I will try
to ssh to the machine next time to get some information.

I have two questions: Tapping would be disable by default in Karmic ?
If it is, there would be information on how to make it work again or at least a
help page or something?
