Addendum to previous comment: I should have said that I'm currently
using Ubuntu 11.10 and that I have an older Toshiba Satellite L305,
which runs remarkably well with Ubuntu, thanks to everyone there!

Same with me, I have enabled horizontal scrolling, checked, double
checked and triple checked that it's still enabled; it is. It works fine
until I put the machine to sleep and then wake it. At that point,
vertical scrolling works perfectly, but horizontal scrolling doesn't,
even if I move the curs

This seems to happen primarily when I'm web browsing, and I believe that
one site in particular might cause it more often, but NOT exclusively.
That site is Adam4Adam.com. Be forewarned that it is a gay male
connection site and contains nudity and NS
