Fair enough, I don't get this precise problem anymore, now it only takes
a long while before I see the login screen, but there's another ticket
for it somewhere.

I have an RX480 GPU with three 4K screens attached, running the AMDGPU
open-source driver.
Once the screens have gone into stand-by (or I shut them off) I get a
black screen when I turn them back on.
To be more precise: I get a black X11 screen, because the mouse is still

After installing the restricted nvidia-drivers and rebooting the driver
would fail to load and Ubuntu would revert to the failsafe graphics.
In synaptic I saw Ubuntu installed nvidia-current (version 195.36.15
...) but mixed a few different versions of other packages with it
