When booting my plucky laptop with my external VGA monitor attached I
get a login screen in 11.10 that is 1024 x 768 mirrored. It's stretched
on the VGA monitor and displayed neatly in the middle of the screen on

Sadly that didn't work for me. Tried using .15 instead of .16 version of
Kernel. Is there anything else I should install as part of using that
ppa?

Having the same issue, are you having it only with 64-bit or have you
tried the 32-bit install?
