@Chris: I tested both, the maverick kernel as well as the drm-intel-next kernel
as you mentioned in your comment.
With both kernel I have the following situation: The internal LID is closed and
the VGA port is connected to an external LCD.
On the LCD I get "Frequency out of range: 12MHz / 15Hz Pl

- power the monitor off and on again still seeing the effect
- playing music continues while the display is powered off
