I noticed that this fix has been backported into linux-image-3.2.0-27.43
(precise-updates). I updated, and it works now! That is, the error
"AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed" is gone now. Gnome
3D/Unity works like a charm.

Can't get 3D hardware rendering to work with the free radeon driver.
Always falls back to software rendering.
System is a Dell Precision 6500 with a ATI FirePro M7740 (ie. RV740).
