search for an answer.

I can confirm this on my desktop (Radeon HD 4850) and notebook (Fusion

Seeing this problem in Natty. Ajax's patch works for me, although
needing the following modifications in Natty due to the KdScreenInfo
data structure definition changing -
screen->fb[0].depth
screen->fb[0].bitsPerPixel
should be:
screen->fb.depth
screen->fb.bitsPerPixel

Purging xserver-xorg-video-nouveau worked here as well. FWIW: The box
hasn't been touched for some months. Probably should have tried this
sooner.
Thanks guys,

nvidia-173 version 173.14.28 is now out, and it also fails to build the
kernel module nvidia-173.ko with kernels 2.6.35 and 2.6.36 (as reported
in bug #694200), although it works with kernel 2.6.32-24. The error
message from the make.log.txt file is slightly different. (Here is a
more complete bug
Bug #599035 also seems to be related -- it deals with the older
nvidia-173 package 173.14.22. It's make.log.txt file is also
informative, but slightly different.
