I switched my kernel from generic-pae to plain old generic and
everything worked. I was able to apply the nvidia proprietary drivers.
I think the problem is between the kernel and the proprietary drivers.
I don't need PAE b/c I don't have more than 4 gb of ram.

nvidia 95 drivers make x unstar
Switching to the vesa driver got X to start again without problems. Let
me know what I should do to gather accurate information on why X won't
start with the nvidia driver.
