This may or may not be a problem with XORG. Looking at some of the past
USB mouse bugs, some of the were fixed in the kernel. But I do not know
how to figure out exactly where the problem is.

Sorry for not responding.
Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie
Padilla above.
The trick to getting around the "startx" command problems that I had
reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason,
that worked.
