Installed ubuntu-desktop metapackage, switched to gdm, rebooted and did the login/logout stuff. No problems encountered. I'll just kiss kdm goodbye for the moment seeing that it does not handle Xorg's crash as well as gdm does. gdm logs: (all identical except for timestamp) diff gdm/\:0.log.1 gdm/
