Ok, looks like I found a solution. For my situation at least. Hopefully
it will work for others also. I noticed that unity-2d had disappeared
from my session options, and my graphics card will only run unity-2d (if
I select "unity" it will normally log me in still, but to the 2d

A fix is in the works, once the new intel drivers have been tested and
are stable they will be included. In the meantime, use the Glassen
PPA, that is where they are being tested.
