I already deleted my PAE kernel, therefore I reinstalled the removed packages:
apt-get install linux-generic-pae linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic-pae
linux-image-generic-pae
These are the interesting lines:

After some more trying I found the following facts: Default kernel is
vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae,
but when I use vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic (i. e. without this physical address
extension) it works

Yesterday I updated from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Lenovo T400 with a Radeon HD 3400
graphics card.
When I boot with the shipped kernel 2.6.38-8 the X server crashes, with the
last kernel 2.6.35-28
it works fine. (See attachments)
I ran aticonfig as suggested but , alas, at no avail. Maybe there is a
