Christopher: The issue does seem resolved after installing the LTS

it does not return.

Christopher: What exactly do you mean by "Would you need a backport to a
release prior to Vivid".
I plan to stick to 14.04 LTS until its end of life, so if a backport of
xorg/nouveau is available it would help me avoid these very irritating
soft-lockups.
Please advise.

This seems to be happening to me also on 14.04, GeForce 6600 AGP,
Nouveau. I'm now going to try and add "nomodeset" to my kernel options

Switched to Nouveau recently due to issues with NVIDIA proprietary
driver for this GeForce 6600 AGP card.
Following is the lockup trace from kern.log:
Apr 28 11:31:59
The lock-up only seems to happen about once a month, and I can see no
pattern to it's occurrence. I would have to switch to a test build for
at least a month to even see if it is reproducible, which is
inconvenient to say the least. Any other things I can try to debug the
issue short of running a t
Public bug reported:
After upgrading my system to Trusty (from precise) I noticed high CPU
loads in Xorg and render errors (Image attached). This occurred with all
the Nvidia proprietary drivers available through "Restricted Drivers".
This only happens on this machine with an old AGP GeForce Serie
This image shows one of the render glitches that happens when using the
proprietary nvidia driver on this machine.
