I don't think so - my system does not display the GDM greeter or anything
subsequent to it.
I hear the startup noise of GDM but plymouth (the Ubuntu logo) remains
onscreen.

I was trying out the Unity interface but it failed to start. I
subsequently removed it, since I was trying to diagnose what the issue
was. It turned out to be a kernel issue. I have not yet re-installed
Unity to try it out again, as I felt that this bug was too important.
I have never
LTS (well, as default as one can have when running
on i8XX chipset) I do not see the problem.
So it was either a local font issue, or a local configuration issue.
Which one it was, is, unfortunately, not something I can say anymore.
