It turns out that simply unchecking the VLC option "Accelerated video
output (Overlay)" in Preference > Video > Display solves the issue.

It started to happen after I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Gnome
freezes (but mouse cursor keeps moving) at least once a day and only Gnome
restarting helps.

Last update crashed down at first start. Then it updated the system and

Ah, no, it actually works!! :) I just needed to do update-initramfs,
since it's probably loaded earlier than I thought at first. :)

The issue only affects the Unity's left panel (launcher). The closest I
can get with Gnome is making a window semi-transparent via Compiz
Transparency plugin, but the content under it scrolls perfectly.

Speaking about testing, here is one more feedback from me:
I'm using my maverick with this patch applied for a couple of months
now. Shortcuts are working as they should in Firefox, Eclipse and Gnome
terminal,
This bug produce aolso two problems:
1) in xterm (utf8 mod) cyrillic characters don't display properly;
2) in Lazarus IDE editor copy to clipboard don't work properly: this text may
not be pasted outside the IDE.
Adding alias ru_UA.utf8 -> ru_UA.UTF-8 solve the problem.

I don't know enough about X programming to fix the menu issue (and my
limited knowledge suggests that it's not possible for an application
like XCreateMouseVoid - it really does not receive events when other
window does "active mouse grab"; one would have to use XTest, I imagine
(and
Azamat S. Kalimoulline, we all here are interested, how many more years
will it take, for this at last to happen.
AlexGenaud, I suppose Ctrl+Shift is a good shortuct (actually I used it
in Windows as well, cause it seems to me more convenient as default
Alt+Shift)

1. System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual effects: all items are grayed and
"None" is selected.
2. Transparent background in terminal works incorrect, I see desktop background
instead of windows behind the terminal window.

Slightly reworked nZain's "XCreateMouseVoid.c": no more 'modes', just
'edge resistance' all around; also fixes the slightly annoying mouse
jumping.
For best results create a window slightly larger than 'void', like this:

I've found similar bugs, but according to some developer comment in there I
decided to report a new bug since it's more comfortable for them.
After enabling Compiz effects the system behave sometime normally but then
suddenly fr
ore user-friendly :)
