One return from sleep I just get a black screen.
I can switch to a different display and get a terminal session.
If I switch to display ctrl+alt+f1 then I can login but if I do login then all
I get is the same black screen as in the other screen that failed to resume.

I installed all other updates, except libglapi-mesa update from
24.0.9-0ubuntu0.3
to 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1, because that update not only was unchecked by
default,
but disabled, so I wasn't able to install it via the GUI.

Btw, did you upgrade any other packages?
You need to upgrade all installed mesa packages, or things will go bad.
The dependencies are a bit wrong right now, libgl1-mesa-dri should at
least have libgbm1 match the same version. This will be fixed in a
future update.

This is somewhat intended. Graphical toolkits default to using Wayland
over X11. Even if $WAYLAND_DISPLAY is not set, the default `wayland-0`
name will be attempted and if that exists it will be used, regardless of
whether it's a nested compositor
