I understand the frustration. Windows has the annoying habit of resetting your
settings too after a major/"cumulative" update.
Going from Unity to GNOME probably made it harder for Ubuntu devs to transfer
all the personalization settings.

And by the way, this idiocy of having the system bar PLUS the maximized
window's top bar (which used to be one) eats up a significant amount of
vertical space, and gives ZERO extra functionality. There's a lot of
empty space in both, and they contain the exact same elements that were
already there,

I have just upgraded from ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 (and I would have
upgraded to 20.04 already if the stupid package manager weren't unable
to resolve some conflicts which are "holding back" packages).

I have just upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04
Now, every time I hit the TAB key in a terminal to autocomplete a file
name, when there is no option or more than one, an annoying and ungodly
loud drum sound plays.
I'm pretty sure I disabled that sound years ago

With the mainline kernel you linked, I get different behaviour:
Most of the time after suspending and waking up again, the system
freezes completely (sometimes immediately to a black screen, sometimes I
can see a second roll over on the clock before it freezes). In this
