when I click on the Activities button and try to start an application my
X session freezes. I can move the mouse around and bring up the dock on
the side of the screen, but no windows will come up. This problem does
not come up if I open applications from the applications menu

The messages Daniel found in comment #4 indicate a systemd issue that I
fixed upstream a few months ago. I'm sorry, I thought we already had the
fix in Ubuntu but it seems we don't - it's in v245.
