Never mind. I think I somehow managed to boot an older iso. I zsynced
just before so I don't know how that happened. I can't reproduce this

After a clean install of Ubuntu Mate 18.04.1 LTS 64bit on my laptop HP
Elitebook 2540p Intel Core i7 CPU 640 @ 2.13GHz x 4 the screen goes blank
before the login screen appears.
Kernel Linux 4.15.0-36-generic x86_64.
It was fine using Ubuntu Mate 16.x.
