Vulnerabilities always exist in the world of computers. If fixing a
driver is all that is required to make it work for the users like me who
require it then that should be done. One need only attach a disclaimer
that the driver should be used at one's own risk and problem solv

Could some friendly soul provide instructions on how to apply the patch
from comment #2 ?
Or are there any chances it will be applied in a way that the
proprietary driver manager will find the (patched) 304.137 driver again?

Thank you for your answer. I solved the problem with nvidia prime not
really disabling the nvidia card (still drawing power) when switching to
Intel with:
sh -c 'echo auto > /sys/bus/pci/devices/\:01\:00.0/power/control'
Almost halved the power draw on my Dell XPS 15.

I had ubuntu 17.10 running on my dell xps 15, which worked fine for
months. Today I made the mistake of upgrading to 18.04, and now I am not
getting any graphics anymore with the nvidia driver.
With the nouveau driver I do get a login screen (display manager), but

If you need it so badly, then you can probably put it in a ppa and
continue to use it as before, knowing that it won't get any security
support any more. Or switch to another distro, threats like that won't
bring it back.

Andreas, nvidia on my notebook is enabled and working properly. It is
not disabled.
Currently I only one option enabled for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in
/etc/default/grub :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash"
I do not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
If you backup file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, remove
My office is full of HP workstations with nvidia quadro cards which need
this driver. Like other respondents, I will have to move to another
distribution if the 304 driver is not available for Ubuntu.

Ivan Janes,
With those options NVidia card seems to be disabled properly but now the
systems hang whenever I plug in the laptop power charger. Also, I can
only use Wayland and not Xorg (freeze again). Maybe the last one is a
bad xorg.conf?
